Life at Spicer High (Part 4)

Valentine Day Special (true story but cast in Valentine ethos)



Long long ago in the far away mythical land of India at Poona is a kingdom called Spicer High, ruled by a mighty king called Dr M E Cherian.

 He kept his subjects in tight control with many of his secert agents (staff) looking for anyone who might be a potential troublemaker. Anyone who  breaks the law of the land is severely punished including banishment from his kingdom (sent home),


Burma (Myanmar)

One day in 1959, a Prince from Burma,, son of the Treasurer, U Pein Gyi, comes flying in his golden chariot, UBA, (Union of Burma Airways) and lands in Calcutta (Kolkata) and travels in a convey for three days and three nights to Poona via Kalyan. By the time he reaches Spicer, the fair prince was black, covered with soot from the coal engine train.

The prince brought along with him his bodyguards as pictured below. Among them was the court jester, Nelson Hla Pe, to keep them all in good humour.

Now the real romance begins. The King, Dr Cherian keeps all his princesses in a safe dungeon called the Womens Hostel, guarded by a stern hostel matron. The Prince could not possibly hope to kidnap one from that place. So he scouts around and to his good luck, finds a beautiful tall, broad and dark eyed beauty living near the place where the students eat, the cafeteria.

So they see eye to eye and the romance begins. However King Cherian's spies (staff) noticed this and reported the matter to the king. "Bring the foreign Prince before me" he tells them.

So they handcuff the Prince and brings him before the king. However the king was a very kind and sympathetic person. "Dear Prince, he says, we notice that you are going around with this wicked lady". (Ah The Prince thought his lover is a very good lady) The King continues, "please do not have any connection with that bad lady". Yes you Majesty, "the Prince replies".

The king then places a sheet of paper in front of the Prince and says,"Write here a confession stating that you have trangressed the law of the land and will no more commit the crime again. The Prince  then writes the confession and stamps his signet seal (signature) on the paper. 

He walks out smiling. The king spices got the wrong person who the prince loves. Actually they see the Prince with her cousin, termed in Spicer High as "The Postman". (No mobiles those days, so communication was with handwritten love notes and the "Postman"carries to the right person).

But later the spies see The Prince with the real person in Poona main street. Once again King Cherian calls The Prince to his throne. "Now we know the correct person who you are in love with (girlfriend)". "What are you doing with her in Main Street? he thundered. "Well King Cherian, I took her to a photo studio", the prince replies. "Oh, you want to take a picture of both of you together" he shouted. "No King, we were together but I just escorted her to the studio so that she can take a passport picture", "Oh I see" says the king. "But keep in mind, the laws of the land are for everybody". "Yes your Majesty, The Prince replies. ( Of course she took some more pictures of herself alone and gave them to The Prince who carefully preserves them).

Shortly afterwards the lovely Princes flies to a foreign country and The Prince  searches for another Valetine.

Spicer Auditorium (Spicer High on the left side) Life at Spicer High (Sabbath Day) There is a buzz of activities before the sun goes down of Friday. My task is usually to make the young men look prim and proper. And I have a few customers all line up ready for a haircut behind the Men's Hostel. Winston Jacob, better known as Winston Churchill, is my ardent fan, and he meekly subjects himself to my not too sharp scissors. Someone starts singing Click Here for the song. and others join in, On Sabbath days, after breakfast, we have time to get ready for church. At 9 am we go to the Auditorium and sit in our assigned places and the person in charge takes our attendance. For my group it is Pramode Shivajirao Gaikwad. He sits next to me. I like the song service. There seems to be a perfect blend of harmony as the ladies sing the soprano and alto while the men sing the bass and tenor.
