Spicer Auditorium (Spicer High on the left side)

Life at Spicer High (Sabbath Day)

There is a buzz of activities before the sun goes down of Friday. My task is usually to make the young men look prim and proper. And I have a few customers all line up ready for a haircut behind the Men's Hostel. Winston Jacob, better known as Winston Churchill, is my ardent fan, and he meekly subjects himself to my not too sharp scissors. Someone starts singing Click Here for the song.
and others join in,

On Sabbath days, after breakfast, we have time to get ready for church. At 9 am we go to the Auditorium and sit in our assigned places and the person in charge takes our attendance. For my group it is Pramode Shivajirao Gaikwad. He sits next to me.

I like the song service. There seems to be a perfect blend of harmony as the ladies sing the soprano and alto while the men sing the bass and tenor.

Here are some of the sermons I remember and the speakers.

Pr G J Christo

Pastor G J Christo. He took a Week of Prayer presenting Mrs E G White's book "Steps to Christ" Starting with the first chapter,"God's Love for Man", Then he continues throughout the week with the following other chapters such as, "The Sinner's Need of Christ, Repentance, Confession", etc. The messages really impress my young mind. Earlier I have mostly heard of EG White's name in my language but have not read her books. Now I eagerly read her books from the library. "The Great Controversy" is the book that grips my attention.

                                   Pr R L Rowe

I remember Pr R L Rowe speaking on the Ten Commandments. He says God's commandments are His enablings and says in such a way that you will be enable not to steal, murder and so on. But usually Pr Rowe is a monotonous speaker, I listen to him, while others are in dreamland, because of his rich knowledge of Mrs White's writings. He is known as the walking enclopedia of Mrs White's writings. Usually towards the end of his sermons we hear the sound of music, (the spoons).

The other preacher who keeps us awake is, I think, Pastor Maywald or Pastor Boony, When he wants to emphasis a point in the sentence, his hands go up and back behind his head and come crashing down almost banging the pulpit somewhat like a cricket fast bowler. And throughout the sermon he displays this action now and then.

The next preacher is a powerful speaker.

Dr M E Cherian

His sermon I remember most is on "Where Would You Be If It Were Not for the Church". He presents his sermon with apt illustrations showing the various ways in which the church helps a person. No one dares to drop a spoon during his sermons.

After lunch most students disappear into dreamland. I remember going with Joseph Sibil, a college student, and distributes Adventist magazines to the people living nearby.

Then coming back for supper, we look for the exciting moments to follow.

(To be continued)
